Kate DiCamillo
Many of Kate DiCamillo's books reflect on finding hope in difficult times and circumstances. She has a way of weaving stories that touch readers' hearts, create empathy and give hope to children longing to know that it will be okay.
Kate moved to Minnesota from Florida. It was actually being away from home and feeling homesick that inspired her first novel Because of Winn Dixie, which won a Newbery Honor award. Kate DiCamillo was the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature from 2014-2015.

Childhood was very different in1930s London, England. School was compulsory for children ages 5-14, but at 14 years of age most left school to work or take care of their younger siblings. The lives of children from affluent families was in stark contrast from the unemployed who experienced poverty, slum housing and deprivation.
Lessons in school focused on reading, writing, and math. Discipline in school was strict. Anyone deemed to have misbehaved could expect to be given 100 lines to write out (“I must not…”), . . . " Aside from playing outside all day when school was out, kids liked to listen to the radio, play board games such as Ludo and Snakes and Ladders, or play with toy trains, airplanes, dolls and dolls houses. Boys and girls could also join the Cubs, Brownies, Boy or Girl Scouts. Trips to the cinema were very popular.
